What "Good" Room Acoustics Means

Good room acoustics means sound behaves predictably and comfortably: speech is clear, music is balanced, and excessive echo is controlled. The central measure is the reverberation time RT60 — how long sound lingers after the source stops.

Step 1 — Identify the Problem

Determine whether the issue is echo/reverberation inside the room (needs absorption) or noise passing between rooms (needs insulation). They are different problems. See Sound Absorption vs Sound Insulation.

Step 2 — Add Absorptive Treatment

  • Add acoustic panels on walls and ceilings to reduce reverberation.
  • Use baffles and clouds on ceilings for large or open spaces.
  • Target first-reflection points (walls beside and behind speakers/listeners) for clarity.

Step 3 — Choose the Right Material and Mounting

Match thickness and air gap to the frequencies you need to control — see Panel Thickness and Air Gap. Thicker panels and an air gap control low frequencies better.

Step 4 — Balance Absorption

Avoid over-absorbing a room, which makes it feel "dead." Aim for balanced treatment — usually treating 25–50% of the wall/ceiling area is a reasonable starting point, verified by measurement where practical.

Relevant Standards

  • ISO 3382 — measurement of room acoustic parameters including reverberation time.

Limitations

Improving room acoustics is a design process; results depend on room volume, surfaces, and the amount and placement of treatment. Calculations estimate, but measurement confirms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much treatment do I need? It depends on room size and use; a measurement or calculation of RT60 is the reliable way to know.

Can I over-treat a room? Yes — too much absorption makes a room feel dead and dull.
