Sound MaskingAcoustic Privacyfor Modern Workspaces

Soundproofing / Noise Isolation
Used for Noise isolation · sound transmission control between spaces
Installation area Ceiling (electronic system)
Main metric STC / Rw
Important: This product reduces sound transmission between spaces. It does not reduce echo inside a room — combine with absorption materials for full acoustic treatment.

Yamamah Smart deploys SmartSMS-NET sound masking — engineered by the largest acoustical consultant in Canada (since 1996). Reduce speech distractions, protect confidentiality, and create comfortable, productive spaces across offices, healthcare, banks and call centers.

Watch how SmartSMS-NET works

A short product overview showing how Soft dB's adaptive sound masking makes offices quieter and more private — without you noticing it's running.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW · ~1 MIN

— THE TECHNOLOGY —

What is Sound Masking?

A uniform, neutral, non-disturbing background sound that covers distracting conversations and noises — making them less intelligible and less disruptive without making the space silent.

Uniform Spectrum

Engineered 1/3-octave spectrum, evenly distributed across every speaker zone.

Unobtrusive Airflow

Sounds like gentle HVAC airflow — users stop consciously noticing it within minutes.

Speech Privacy

Speech becomes unintelligible at 15–40 ft from the source — no isolation walls required.

NOT Cancellation

Sound masking adds a managed background layer — it does not subtract sound like noise-cancelling headphones.

— PROVEN RESULTS —

The "Perfect" zone · 40–50 dBA

SmartSMS-NET tunes your background sound level to the precise zone where masking works without becoming a distraction. ±1 dB precision — measured and calibrated per zone.

dBA Noise Level scale showing optimal sound masking range — Perfect zone 40-50 dBA where speech becomes unintelligible without occupant fatigue
20–30 dBA
Not Enough BG
Silent — every footstep, whisper, keystroke audible. Distracting.
30–40 dBA
Still Too Low
Speech still intelligible from 25+ ft. Suboptimal privacy.
40–50 dBA
PERFECT ✓
Speech unintelligible at 15+ ft. Comfort + privacy balanced.
50–60 dBA
Too Much BG
Noticeable — users strain to hear conversations. Causes fatigue.
SmartSMS-NET's adaptive control keeps your space precisely in the green all day — even as occupancy and ambient noise change.

Why SmartSMS-NET?

Networked, adaptive sound masking with patented automatic calibration — the 3rd-generation controller platform.

📊

Adaptive Volume

Real-time measurement of ambient noise. The masking level adjusts gradually — louder during busy periods, softer in quiet times — for continuous comfort and effectiveness.

🎯

Automatic Calibration

Patented (US 7460675 B2): measures each room's acoustic response and background noise, then computes the optimal masking spectrum per speaker zone. ±1 dB precision · 1 min per zone.

🌐

Networked Multi-Zone

WiFi, LAN, or USB connectivity. Each speaker zone is independently controllable. Aux inputs for paging or music. Touch-screen, mobile app, or LAN control.

Calibrate once, adapt forever — the SmartSMS-NET controller continuously balances comfort and efficiency.

PATENT US 7460675 B2

Automatic Calibration

  • ◆ Measures each room's acoustic response
  • ◆ Captures the background noise spectrum
  • ◆ Computes the optimal masking spectrum across 1/3-octave bands
  • ◆ Adjusts each speaker zone independently
  • ±1 dB precision · ~1 minute per zone

REAL-TIME · ADAPTIVE

Adaptive Adjustment

  • ◆ Continuously measures ambient noise via ceiling-mounted sensors
  • ◆ Masking volume tracks office activity — louder when busy, softer when quiet
  • ◆ Adjustments only for sustained variations — never for sudden spikes
  • ◆ Gradual ramps — virtually unnoticeable to occupants
  • Maximizes both comfort and masking efficiency

🎓 ACADEMIC EVIDENCE

"People exposed to level-adaptive sound masking felt less tense, nervous, and stressed than those who did not receive the intervention."

— FREQUENTLY ASKED —

Quick answers about sound masking

Is sound masking the same as noise cancellation?

No. Noise cancellation actively subtracts sound (used in headphones). Sound masking adds a precisely engineered background sound to cover existing distractions, making them less intelligible — without making the room silent.

How loud is it? Will employees notice?

Sound masking is engineered to sound like gentle airflow — most occupants stop consciously noticing it within minutes. The adaptive system raises and lowers the level gradually based on ambient activity, so changes are imperceptible.

How long does installation & calibration take?

Speakers install in the ceiling plenum during off-hours. Patented automatic calibration takes about 1 minute per zone — typical floors are calibrated in under an hour.

Can I control it remotely / from a phone?

Yes. SmartSMS-NET ships with iOS and Android apps, plus LAN / WiFi / USB connectivity. The RL96 rackmount controller also has an on-device touch-screen for daily operations without a PC.

What dB level is optimal?

40-50 dBA is the optimal range. Below 40 dBA the background is too low to mask speech effectively. Above 50 dBA the masking becomes noticeable and causes fatigue. SmartSMS-NET calibrates to ±1 dB precision.
