Definition

ISO and ASTM are the two main families of acoustic standards used worldwide. They define how sound is measured, how single-number ratings are calculated, and how acoustic performance is reported. They are parallel systems — neither is "more correct" than the other. ISO dominates in Europe and much of the Gulf region, while ASTM is the reference in North America.

ISO vs ASTM — Which Standard When

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) publishes international standards such as ISO 354 for absorption measurement and ISO 717-1 for sound insulation ratings. ASTM (ASTM International, formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) publishes equivalent standards such as ASTM C423 for absorption and ASTM E90/E413 for sound transmission. The two systems cover the same physical quantities but often use different procedures, band widths and rating methods.

In practice, the "correct" system is the one referenced by your project specification or local building code. Many regions accept either system, but the specific standard named in a tender is the one the testing laboratory must follow.

Key Organizations

  • ISO — the International Organization for Standardization, a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (e.g. ASTM in the US).
  • ASTM International — a global standards organization, best known for its US-centric testing methods.
  • Regional adopters — European Norms (EN), Gulf standards bodies, and national codes often adopt ISO-based methods with local references.

Relevant Standards

The standards most often encountered in acoustic design:

  • ISO 354 — measurement of sound absorption in a reverberation room (the basis for the absorption coefficient α).
  • ASTM C423 — sound absorption coefficients by the reverberation room method; defines NRC and SAA.
  • ISO 11654 — rating of sound absorption; defines the weighted coefficient αw and absorption classes A–E.
  • ISO 717-1 — rating of sound insulation in buildings; defines the weighted index Rw.
  • ISO 10140 — laboratory measurement of sound insulation of building elements.
  • ASTM E90 — laboratory measurement of airborne sound transmission loss (the basis for STC).
  • ASTM E413 — classification for rating sound insulation; defines STC.
  • ISO 3382-1 / -2 / -3 — measurement of room acoustic parameters, including RT60 (reverberation time).

Test Method

Absorption (α, NRC, SAA, αw) is measured in a reverberation room per ISO 354 or ASTM C423, then rated per ISO 11654 or ASTM C423. Sound insulation (STC, Rw) is measured in coupled transmission suites per ISO 10140 or ASTM E90, then classified per ASTM E413 or ISO 717-1. Room acoustics (RT60) are measured on-site per ISO 3382-1. Each family is internally consistent; the numbers are only meaningful if you know which standard produced them.

Which Standard to Choose

There is no universal "better" standard. Choose the one your specification, authority or export market requires. If you export to or work with the Gulf/Europe, ISO-based ratings (Rw, αw, RT60) are typical; if the project follows US practice, ASTM-based ratings (STC, NRC) apply. A reputable laboratory can often report both, but the acceptance criterion in your contract determines which matters.

Common Misunderstandings

  • "ISO is more accurate than ASTM" — incorrect; they are parallel, not one better than the other.
  • "STC and Rw are the same thing and interchangeable" — incorrect; they use different reference curves and can differ by a few dB for the same wall.
  • "NRC and αw are equal" — incorrect; NRC is a four-band ASTM average, αw is an ISO weighted rating with a class.
  • "Any laboratory number is valid regardless of standard" — incorrect; a rating is only meaningful with the standard that produced it.
  • Quoting a required STC or IIC from memory — avoid; building code values must be read from the current local code, not assumed.

Limitations

  • ISO and ASTM values are measured under different laboratory conditions; they are not always directly comparable.
  • Single-number ratings (STC, Rw, NRC, αw) hide frequency detail.
  • Results depend on mounting, thickness, air gap and test configuration.
  • On-site field performance can differ from laboratory values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is STC the same as Rw? No. STC (ASTM E413) and Rw (ISO 717-1) rate airborne sound insulation with different reference curves; they often differ by a few dB for the same partition.

Which standard should my project use? The one named in your specification or local code. ISO is common in Europe and the Gulf; ASTM in North America.

Can I convert an ASTM rating to an ISO rating? Not with a fixed formula — the procedures differ. Report values with the standard that produced them.

What is RT60 and which standard covers it? RT60 is reverberation time, measured on-site per ISO 3382-1 (with ISO 3382-2 and -3 for other parameters).

Are these standards about the products or the measurements? They govern the measurement and rating methods. Product claims should always name the standard behind the number.
