How Room Acoustics Are Measured
Comprehensive Room Analysis
Measuring room acoustics requires specialized tools and techniques to understand sound behavior and identify problems and appropriate solutions.
Reverberation Time (RT60)
The most common measurement in acoustics. It measures the time it takes for sound to decay by 60 decibels. It is measured using a sound source, calibrated microphone, and analysis software.
Speech Transmission Index (STI)
Measures speech intelligibility in a space on a scale from 0 to 1. Values above 0.6 are considered good for meeting rooms and classrooms.
Ray Tracing
An advanced computer technique that simulates sound wave paths in a space to predict sound behavior and optimize acoustic design before implementation.
