You've invested in a 4K projector, Atmos speakers, and a perfectly calibrated AVR — but your home theatre still sounds boomy in the corners and harsh on dialogue. The culprit is almost never the equipment. It's the room. Untreated rooms produce reflections, modes, and reverberation that destroy what the speakers actually deliver.
This guide outlines the four acoustic interventions that transform a home theatre — using verified Yamamah Smart products and standard placement principles from professional cinema design.
Intervention 1 — Tame the Front Wall
The wall behind your front speakers (LCR) reflects sound back into the listening area, smearing dialogue and the centre image. Cover at least the area behind each speaker with broadband absorption — 50 mm fabric panels or 100 mm PET. Aim for ~4 m² total absorption on the front wall.
Intervention 2 — Treat the First Reflections
Side walls and ceiling reflect dialogue and surround information before it reaches your ears. Place fabric panels (NRC up to 0.90) at the mirror points — find them by having a friend slide a mirror along the wall while you sit; mark the wall where you can see each speaker in the mirror.
Intervention 3 — Bass Traps in Corners
Low frequencies (under 200 Hz) pile up in room corners, creating a boomy 'one-note' bass. Floor-to-ceiling thick fabric panels (100 mm) or stacked PET panels in two front corners are the single biggest improvement in home theatre clarity. Better mid-bass = better dialogue and tighter Atmos pans.
Intervention 4 — Diffuse the Rear Wall
Don't over-deaden a home theatre. Behind the seating, you want some controlled reflection to maintain envelopment for surround effects. Grooved or slotted wood panels (NRC 0.55–0.90 depending on configuration) provide both absorption AND scattering, keeping the room sounding 'alive' without echo.
Recommended Home Theatre Products
A combination of broadband absorbers (front wall + side reflections + bass traps) and diffusers (rear wall).
