The Fundamental Difference in One Sentence

Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) blocks sound from passing between two rooms. Acoustic panels reduce echo and reverberation inside a single room. They solve completely different problems and most professional installations need both.

What Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) Actually Does

MLV is a dense, flexible barrier — 3 mm × 1,800 kg/m³ in the Yamamah Smart specification. It works by mass: sound waves hit the dense sheet and either reflect back or dissipate as tiny amounts of heat inside the viscoelastic material. MLV is installed as a decoupled layer inside walls, above ceilings, beneath floating floors, or wrapped around pipes and HVAC ducts.

MLV's job: Stop sound moving from Room A to Room B. Rated in STC. Yamamah MLV: the manufacturer datasheet lists STC 33 dB as a single layer (a material value, not the STC of a complete wall assembly); combined with drywall + mineral wool reaches STC 45-55.

MLV cannot: Reduce echo inside a room. If you install MLV on a wall as the visible finish (which you shouldn't), the room will still be echoey.

What Acoustic Panels Actually Do

Acoustic panels — PET felt, fabric-wrapped, wood-slat, foam, moss, wood-wool — are porous absorbers. Sound waves entering the panel lose energy as they travel through the porous material. The energy converts to negligible heat and the sound is gone.

Acoustic panels' job: Reduce echo, reverberation, and background noise within a room. Rated in NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) from 0.0 to 1.0. Yamamah PET panels contribute to sound absorption, with performance depending on thickness, mounting, air gap and tested configuration.

Acoustic panels cannot: Stop sound from passing between rooms. A room lined with premium acoustic panels but with thin walls will still leak sound to the next room.

No — acoustic panels are porous and let sound pass through easily. Even a wall covered floor-to-ceiling in acoustic panels will not prevent sound leaking to the next room without MLV or equivalent mass barrier.

Which is more expensive?

Per square meter, acoustic panels typically cost more than MLV. But a soundproofing project needs 100% coverage of walls with MLV (hidden), while acoustic panels only cover 30-70% of surfaces (visible finish). Total project cost depends on square meters and specification.

Do I install MLV or panels first?

MLV goes inside the wall assembly during construction (before drywall closes the wall). Acoustic panels install last, on the finished wall surface. For retrofit projects on existing walls, panels can install directly; MLV requires opening the wall or building a new interior wall.
