How Sound Absorption Is Measured

Overview

Sound absorption is measured in a reverberation room — a large, hard-surfaced enclosure designed to reflect sound for a long time. The two equivalent standards are ISO 354 and ASTM C423. The result is the frequency-dependent absorption coefficient α, from which NRC, SAA and αw are derived.

Why a Reverberation Room?

A reverberation room has highly reflective walls, so sound bounces many times before decaying. Adding an absorbing specimen shortens the decay. The faster the decay, the more energy the specimen absorbed. This makes the measurement a true test of the material's absorption, independent of a specific listener position.

The Test Method

  • Step 1 — empty room: measure the reverberation time (decay) of the empty room across frequency bands.
  • Step 2 — with specimen: place a defined specimen area (commonly about 10 m²) in a defined mounting, and measure the reverberation time again.
  • Step 3 — calculate: the difference in decay gives the equivalent absorption area added by the specimen; dividing by specimen area gives the absorption coefficient α per frequency.

Specimen and Mounting

The result depends strongly on how the specimen is mounted: directly on the floor/wall, or with an air gap. Standards define several mounting configurations, and the reported α must state which was used. This is why the same material can report different values under different test conditions.

From α to Single Numbers

  • NRC — average of α at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz (rounded to 0.05).
  • SAA — average of α over twelve one-third-octave bands from 200 to 2500 Hz.
  • αw — weighted single number per ISO 11654.

Relevant Standards

  • ISO 354 — Acoustics — Measurement of sound absorption in a reverberation room.
  • ASTM C423 — Sound absorption and absorption coefficients by the reverberation room method.
  • ISO 11654 — Rating of sound absorption (αw).

Limitations

  • α can slightly exceed 1.0 because of edge and diffraction effects; this is a test artifact, not physical absorption above 100%.
  • Laboratory values use specific mounting and air-gap conditions that may not match a real installation.
  • Field (in-situ) performance differs from laboratory values.

Common Mistakes

  • Comparing absorption values without checking the mounting configuration.
  • Treating the reverberation-room α as identical to field performance.
  • Confusing α (frequency curve) with NRC (single number).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can absorption be measured in a normal room? Field measurement is possible but different from the laboratory reverberation-room method, which is the standard reference for published α/NRC values.

Why do different tests give different NRC? Because mounting, air gap, specimen area and the specific laboratory all affect the result.
